Reflective Synopsis

What an unreal experience this last 9 weeks has been with regards to the wealth of new technologies and communication tools I have been introduced to. The importance of this will greatly affect my performance as a Learning manager whilst also creating a learning environment in which learners can achieve their potential. From the very beginning of the course I was a little scared yet rather interested in seeing what technology I was yet to discover throughout my brief involvement with computers and the internet. Not only was it the technology but also the principle of Netiquette which was new to me. Netiquette as I found out was the term used for electronic communication and involved a system of rules which unofficially govern the way in which we share information amongst one another. This was definitely an area which I needed brushing up on. Netiquette is something which students need to be aware of and in my classroom I will endeavour to ensure that every student is aware of this.

Skype was next on the list of things to do and as I was already familiar with this I found it rather easy to grasp a hold of. My brother used to live in Brisbane and I found that Skype was definitely a far smarter option particularly when compared with the cost of making a phone call. Skype is something which students can put to good use particularly when it comes to group assignments as it allows for group conversations to take place. It also has a chat function which can also be rather useful as it uses up far less download.

When It comes to engaging my learners I thought that I had it all down and ready to go, little did I actually know particularly after reading the article by Greg Kearsley & Ben Shneiderman titled 'Engagement Theory - A framework for technology-based teaching and learning'. This article is basically the driver for this entire course and is the way of the future in terms of teaching. The engagement theory is based upon the idea of creating successful collaborative teams that work on ambitious projects that are meaningful to someone outside the classroom. This theory is composed of three key components:

Relate: emphasises team efforts that involve communication, planning, management and social skills.

Create: makes learning a creative, purposeful activity.

Donate: stresses the value of making a useful contribution while learning.

(Kearsley & Shneiderman, 2009)

This way of thinking must also be related back to Mazlow's Hierachy of needs and I truly believe that this way of thinking is actually how students get the most of their schooling life. Mazlow believes that the needs of human beings could be divided and prioritized into five "levels". Individuals do not seek the satisfaction of a need at one level until the previous "level of need" is met. The five levels of need identified by Maslow were Physiological, Safety/Security, Belonging/Social Affiliation, Self-Esteem and Self-Actualization (Kunc, 1992). This aspect will be something of which may take time to master but over time it will definitely be worthwhile to me as a learning manager.

The next area which we moved onto was that of 21st century learning. In the 21st century Prensky (2001) suggested that learners could be categorised as either 'digital natives' or 'digital immigrants'. Digital natives were born into and grew up around computers however Digital immigrants are forced to go with the changes technologically or risk being left behind. I myself only discovered computers and the internet in 1997 when I was in grade 10. This meant that when compared with today’s generation I would be known as a Digital immigrant Even though I have had a fair bit of experience with computers I am only still coming to grips with it all. This is why it is important as a learning manager to be aware of the fact that most of the students we work with have been using a computer since they could walk and talk. This is a major reason why internet safety is an important aspect for teachers to be aware of as in this day and age children have access to a variety of websites which have the potential to harm their physical well-being. Therefore security measures must be put in place early on and followed through to ensure their safety.

Next thing was that of ICT's (Information Communication Technologies) which are fundamental tools for the 21st Century student. These technologies provide a vast array of learning opportunities and tools that allow learners to make sense of the world and to learn in ways that are not restricted to the classroom (Aldred, 2010). The use of ICT's is a tool which can also be used by students particularly when approaching Problem-Based Learning (PBL) scenarios. These two processes combined with Authentic learning experiences are essential in creating a Learner/Student-Centred learning environment. As Aldred (2010) suggests ‘A teacher knows what the students need to complete their learning. but uses project work and negotiated outcomes to build student ownership which in turn makes the learning meaningful and engaging’.

Now to the more exciting part of this synopsis ‘Digital Pedagogies’. The many digital pedagogies which I have looked at over this last 9 weeks will play a major part in my classroom activities. The first and most important process which I undertook whilst working my way through this course was that of creating my very own blog. In creating my Blog I felt that the whole experience was rather smooth as the website was well laid out and easy to follow. A blog is a tool which can be used by both teachers and students. Students can use this tool to perform group-work activities whilst teachers can also monitor their progress. Once a blog is created it is through the use of a RSS (Really Simple Syndication) that we can follow students or any blogs of interest.

In creating my e-portfolio (Mahara) I found it a little harder as I was having a few problems with my password. It was through the prompt service of my lecturer that I was able to sort this issue out. Once I entered the site all I can remember thinking was "wow I am gonna struggle" but upon further inspection and regular visits this theory was put to rest. The mahara portfolio is a tool which teachers can utilise in order to store up to 100mb of educational material. Mahara is the key component in the next assessment task and I feel that my knowledge of this product will be at a higher level at the end of this course then it is now.

Earlier I spoke about the need for students to be engaged in order for them get the best out of their learning and these next tools discussed are integral in doing so. When i first entered this subject via Moodle I was absolutely amazed at the computerized person explaining what was going to take place at the beginning of the chapter so can you imagine what students might feel if they were see the same thing at the beginning of their lessons. A Voki avatar is a simple tool which teachers can use to engage their learners. Students could also use these to create their very own presentations. Vokis are a similar resource to that of video in that they are simple to create yet rather effective in engaging the learner. Video sharing sites such as Youtube or Teachertube allow teachers to provide students with video which is both educational and engaging. An example whereby students could utilise Youtube could be through completing a group presentation on any topic and uploading it onto the website. Image storage and Image manipulation is another interesting aspect in which I feel learners could definitely benefit from. Flickr is an online repository for storing images and can be used for educational purposes. It is through Flickr that students could use the website Picnik.com.au to manipulate the images in a wide variety of ways. Students could use Picnik when creating powerpoint presentations or creating their blogs etc. Google Earth is another useful tool for students as it provides satellite images of the world. Students at the click of a mouse are able to visit the Eiffel Tower or the Pyramids of Giza. This is awesome particularly for students as it provides them with an actual real time look at the area of interest.

Overall as seen throughout my blog it is rather noticeable how great an effect technology has had on my way of thinking particularly in regards to teaching. Gone are the days of chalk and talk and now are the days of Learner Engagement. The process as discussed earlier of Create, Relate and Donate is essential in creating a learning environment which is full of enthusiastic learners. I know that there are so many more resources out there which would be of great benefit to myself and my learners so and I feel that it is rather essential that I continue to be a life-long learner and embrace the many advancements in technology.

Below are some comments which i have provided throughout:

Hi Lauran,

What an awesome ad! Also I cannot believe that Youtube has only been around since 2005 considering how huge it is now! It has also uncovered one of the biggest music phenomonen's in the world nowadays in 'Justin Beiber'. Overall as we can both attest to that Youtube is definitely not just an excellent resource for those wanting information but also for those chasing their 15 minutes of fame.

Yeah i didnt believe when i read that Youtube has been only around since 2005 but as you say yes it is a great source for all the "Justin Beiber's" out there.

I agree with you in regards to Wikipedia having a wealth of information on all topics but my only concern is how credible and reliable the information is? As anybody is able to create a Wikipedia we need to be mindful of who the author/s are.

Effective Storytelling

Storytelling as Aldred (2010) states is one of the oldest forms of intelligent communication particularly when it comes to discussing cultural and historical knowledge between generations. Storytelling honours the past and the cultural perspectives of different people across the earth. These stories due to technology can be utilized by both students and teachers to create their very own versions of these stories. Digital storytelling can be used by students to further push their understanding of the topic. First they must understand before they can present a story. An example related to H.P.E whereby students could use digital storytelling as a resource could be by explaining how blood travels through the heart by creating a heart and its chambers in clay and demonstrating via claymation the different chambers it goes through on it's way to the lungs.

Google Earth, Youtube, Wikipedia, Slideshare, Incompetech

What an unbelievable piece of technology this is! Students via Google Earth are able to visit anywhere in the world simply through the click of a mouse. Something like Google Earth could be used in a number of ways in the classroom. Students are able to search for certain destinations and workout how best to get to the destination through the simple user friendly technology Google Earth provides. Some examples where this tool could be used would be in Geography whereby students have to find certain landmarks throughout the world and provide descriptions of them. Another could be when talking about Ancient history such as Rome you as a teacher could give students directions on how to get to the Collessium and what it looks like right now.

Youtube what more needs to be said about this awesome resource! I have utilised this technology for a number of years now. The amount of information available on any topic is valuable for teachers and students alike. I have a massive interest in sport and the physiological aspects involved. Youtube provides myself with a wealth of information in this area. For my students it can be used as a resource for information regarding any assignements they might be working on as it provides simplified examples and visual examples which help in understanding and comprehension.

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that can allow anybody to contribute any information they may have on the topic. This is a major reason why Wikipedia should not be relied upon to heavily. However the majority of Wikipedia sites are rather reliable as they have been updated by sources such as journal articles etc.

Slideshare is a resource which allows the users the opportunity to upload their files such as a powerpoint and add music or narration. This type of resource would be rather valuable for the learning manager in particular as it could be used a number of times. They would however need to be updated if need be. Also as it is a shared resource students would be able to have access outside the classroom if they are away for some reason.

Incompetech is a website which allows users to use their music free of charge as all music is royalty free. Both Students and the Learning manager could use this resource to add a variety of jingles, music and sounds to their visual presentations. Due to copyright restrictions and laws it is important that every body follows correct procedures as big fines and penalties could be imposed.

I have added a video which students who are studying H.P.E could watch. This video provides many examples of what a good coach should not do.

Powerpoint

Recently I had the pleasure of doing a 3 day induction with Red Cross in Brisbane. After working through the tutorial I noticed that what alot of the presentations did where exactly what is mentioned not to do. 'Death by power point' was the common thought after the dirst day of induction. After enduring this for three days I now have a greater understanding of the importance of creating a powerpoint presentation which is not only informative but also engaging. Just getting through the information is not enough as students need to be given opportunities to discuss what is being presented and time must be given for the students to comprehend the information. Even though the three days were very informative it really pushed home the point of interactive powerpoint presentations.

Picnik

How awesome is Picnik!! I cannot believe that i never knew about this website! This website enables users to upload pictures and edit them also. The options are endless and everything you can imagine can be created to make that boring old photo into something extraordinary.

Here is a picture that I edited of my pet dog 'Buddy'. It is pretty basic editing but for students and with time they could create many great things using Picnik.

ICT's and Blogs

Integrating ICT's into learning design is an interesting and useful topic this week.
Setting up my blog was the first task which i undertook this week. I found this a rather fun experience as it gave me the chance to create my very own design and layout while giving me the options of colours and texts to be used also. I feel that a blog is rather similair to a journal with the only difference being that it accessible to anyone and everyone depending on whether the blog is private or not. I found it interesting having a look at other students profiles and getting an idea into what their thoughts and ideas were.

Using a blog in the classroom can be very beneficial in many ways as it can be used for students on a daily basis to jot down everything which they may have learnt or found interesting throughout the lesson/day. I liked the idea also in one of the examples which suggested that a tutor could get on the blog and provide both support and education outside of the classroom.

In my teaching area (H.P.E) I could definitely use Blogs as a tool for my students. A lot of the assessment in P.E requires group tasks. Students could use their blogs to share their ideas whilst me as a teacher could monitor their progress rather easily.

Mahara & Voki

Setting up my Mahara account was an experience and a half as I was placed in a new group only yesterday. I have now joined an awesome group called the CQ Raiders and can't wait to get in and work with these great people. I actually got some great advice from my team mate Laura today with regards to creating my Mahara account. This was done via Skype chat. I feel that as time goes by I will get rather familiar with this useful tool and will prove to be rather beneficial in providing myself with many new options in the classroom.

I actually created a Voki early on in the term. This was placed as the first post on my blog and I found it rather awesome actually. The whole idea of having control of what the avatar says is something which left me in awe. I think that this would be a useful tool particularly in the same way as Scott has done throughout this course for introducing topics and gaining the students attention. Students can also use the Avatar for presenting their assignments as it is new and 'cool' technology.

Learner/Student centred learning

Many students coming into Secondary School will find that technology is nothing new to them as most have used a computer from the day they were born. This then makes them a digital native, on the other hand I myself never saw a computer until I hit grade 10. This meant that I was a digital immigrant however over time I have worked alot with computers (due to the fact my brother is a massive computer geek) haha. Thanks to this chapter I feel even more of a digital immigrant than I did before.

With regards to Internet safety i feel that there are many issues related to this topic. Students in this day and age are easily exposed to inappropriate material on the internet and it is important that students are protected under the duty of care policy. Issues such as chatting with older people, porn and cyberbullying are eliminated as schools have restricted access to these materials.

When working with children of differing abilities it is important that every student is able to access materials which are both challenging and useful. I have worked with a wide range of indigenous students over the years and I have found that these two aspects are what brings the best out of each individual.

As Kearsley and Shneiderman (1999) state that 'learning with ICT's must be related to a real world authentic problem scenario that is messy and ill-structered. They need to, in small teams, CREATE solutions to this problem and then DONATE the solution back into the real world. In other words students are given a problem which they must work together to solve and in order to gain a greater understanding relate it back to the real world.

When it comes to behaviour management strategies at my school I have a fairly good knowledge of the processes which they have put in place. The most common I have found is the RBC (Responsible Behaviour Classroom). This classroom is for students who are not compylying with the class rules. They are asked a group of questions for example:
What are you doing?
What should you be doing?
What are you going to do now?
What happens if you do it again?
This in turn gives the students the responsibility as to whether they want to disrupt the class again. If they decide to continue they are then sent to the RBC where they will complete a re-engagement plan to re-enter the classroom. They will also have to negotiate a time to with their teacher to discuss this re-engagement plan. This process has proven to be a success at the school.

After watching the video featuring George Lucas and Edutopia it really made me realise how right he is. The idea of being a facilitator instead of a teacher is rather interesting. Giving the students a choice and working with them to achieve their interests is what will definitely get positive results in the schooling environment. Students can then take that knowledge and use it in an everyday sense.

Lastly I would like to make a quick mention on that of the learner/student-centred learning processes and how much I love this approach. By giving the students both options and ownership it gives them some meaning. This provides motivation and there is nothing more exciting when working with children then seeing them rip in and have a go.

Learning Styles and Theories

I can't believe the amount of information out there particularly related to the different learning styles and personality of our learners and how it can affect one's learning experiences. I feel that as Learning Managers it is important that we get to know each of our students learning styles and personalities early on. This in turn will provide me with an oportunity to adapt to the variety of student which I am faced with. It is a process which i think would be awesome if all the school could adopt as potentially all students who have similair learning styles could be put together which i feel would create a more efficient classroom.

With regards to the different learning theories: Behaviourism (black box), Cognitivism (brain-based) and Constructivism (own interpretations) I feel that not one individual learning theory is the answer but learning involves bits and pieces of each. These theories are more focused on how information is learnt and less about what is actually being learnt. This is where the Connectivism theory is different as it focuses more on the information being learnt and how it connects to the learner. I find all this intrigueing and feel that this type of learning theory will be beneficial for myself.

Engagement Theory

Wow havent I left myself in a spot of bother!! I have so much to catch up on but in saying that I have been keeping up with the content of the course just haven't been doing the Blogging etc. SO wish me luck guys hahaha.

Week 1

When discussing the article on Engagement Theory I find that alot of what is discussed is what we as learning managers must embrace in order to gain our students full engagement. The use of technology is so widespread that we must create technology based learning opportunities for our students as much as possible. The basic principles of the Learning Engagement Theory (Greg Kearsley & Ben Schneiderman) suggest that students must be engaged in tasks that are meaningful to the students while also working together in a group context to achieve worthwhile outcmes. I feel that this is imporant particularly when working with students who have very little motivation levels. They must see the reasoning behind why they are completing a task in order to feel that it is worthwhile.
